Great Job Brian! Thanks for putting this together!

I love this! Analytics can be hard to follow without visual aids, so the screencast format really helps. Also, great topic. I think a lot of our websites can really benefit from this.

Really interesting, Brian. The screencast format worked very well for this!

@Dave - Glad you liked this format and thanks for watching!

@Jillian - Thank you for writing me that e-mail with recommendations for the next one.

@Eric - Thanks for taking the time to watch the screencast. I'm amazed as to how difficult it was to record 6 minutes of information. It just makes me realize the time and effort you must've put into the dozens of informational videos found on the Newfangled site that are 6 minutes (without the nervous tics).

Brian, very nice combination of why-to and how-to. If someone wanted to look at historical data, would it work to search for the query parameter in content, or does that not get collected that way?
Brian Chiou | December 7, 2009 12:00 AM

Hi Sarah,

You could do a search in the Content section for a phrase assuming the URL has been set up like :
http://www.domain.com/index.php?variable=searchquery.

Also, this is assuming that the Google Analytics profile is not set to automatically strip query parameters. If it is set to strip query parameters, Google Analytics will view the above url as http://www.domains.com/index.php

Good video, the google help page for this is totally useless. Still trying to get my head around the query parameters...can you use any letter or word?
Brian Chiou | January 19, 2010 8:18 AM

Hi SEO Doctor,The query parameters can be any letter or word. Once you set the query parameter, you need to specify it within your Google Analytics account. Click on your Google Analytics account -> Edit the profile you'd like Site Search to be activated on -> Click on Do Include Site Search -> Specify the Query Parameter within the field below the "Do Include Site Search" radio buttons.Hope this helps!

I have a site that doesn't have those search parameters setup....

The site is giftmeister.com, how do I setup my internal search to be able to track this.

When I do search query all I get is this
http://giftmeister.com/gifts/results
