I want my TiVo back.

October 4, 2006 at 11:24 am by Eric

I don’t want to be whiney but I really want my TiVo back. I’ve been hijacked by DirecTV. Not only is DirecTV the only option where I live, but even if I could switch to cable I really need NFL Sunday ticket—just because I moved to North Carolina doesn’t mean I’m jumping ship to the Panthers, no way – Patriots all the way!

I’ve had my TiVo hooked up to my DirecTV receiver but the connection (using the IR transceiver) is just not dependable, and because DirecTV is ending their relationship with TiVo, for their own vastly inferior DVR, they have no intension of making TiVo more compatible with their receivers.

So I recently switched to the DirecTV DVR (R-15). It’s nice having an all in one box, but the interface is so bad compared to TiVo that I’m having a hard time adjusting. Their schedule data screen is extremely slow and often has incomplete data. Sometimes a show doesn’t show up in the listings until only a day or two before it airs.

My unrealistic hope is that DirecTV will change their minds and go back to TiVo. While this is not likely, I at least hope they will aggressively improve their own interface and make it as TiVo like as possible--without infringing on TiVo’s patents.

Of course I can also just wait a little while and drop TV altogether and use my computer to watch TV instead. Many of the shows I watch are already available for small fees (much less than what I get billed every month for DirecTV). And some of them are even free if I’m willing to sit through a commercial. Now if the NFL offered games close to real time online, then I might be very close to bagging regular TV altogether.
