@Alex, The above homepage prototype for Cambashi was sketched on paper initially by Katie. When she was content with the structure on paper, we shifted it online using our prototype tool. Katie and I generally work that way, but other project management teams may take a different approach.

Hi Alex,These paper prototypes are discarded once we have applied the content strategy to our grayscreen prototype. We usually only use them when we foresee many iterations before we are satisfied. It takes us less time to sketch out multiple versions of our content strategy than to prototype each
How We Prototype
We kicked off our 2007 newsletters with "Why We Prototype." It was a short re-telling of how we stumbled upon our grayscreen prototyping process. The longer version is recounted in our book, Client vs. Developer Wars.
We'll finish the year off with the subject of prototyping again--but this time
Why We Prototype
The year 2000 was a pivotal one for Newfangled. We began work on what has become the NewfangledCMS, and it was also the year we first started grayscreen prototyping. While our CMS is the most appreciated by our clients, grayscreen prototyping is really the heart of how Newfangled works. In fact, I w

I see - feel a bit sheepish now. Do you ever prototype things on paper anymore, or is it all digital?

Have you done any recent projects without a prototype? If so, have you experienced any horrible flashbacks?

I begin a paper prototype shortly after completing my design document for the site. Drawing out the site helps me visualize it; then I can start to fill in all the blanks. I have identified and solved most, but not all, navigation, layout, content, and programming problems this way. To \"mock-up\" t

Having that whiteboard prototype up in the meeting/lunch room was a real joy. There is something that is very visually pleasing and even relaxing about an architecture spec drawn out on something other than a screen. Thanks for the therapy!

Just Wondering: We pretty much always do prototypes now, but we have done a couple where the prototype wasn't detailed and thorough enough and yes we felt the tremors of the past - though not nearly as badly. Thanks for your comment!

Sarah, it is so good to see the resident office grammarian writing such masterful posts! This one in particular is probably the best example we have of how our gray screen prototype communicates our intentions for the final site. Well done.

I love the prototype approach, much better than showing clients mock ups they can't use, then get the inevitable "The links don't work" call. I think this approach also helps to limit the amount of browser hacks/headaches by doing all the markup first then just throwing a style sheet on it.

Grayscreen Prototypes: The Secret Sauce
Surprisingly, the most common barrier to effective web development is not technology, but miscommunication
Underlying Principles of Grayscreen Prototyping
The goal of grayscreen prototyping is to effectively communicate the structure, content and functionality of a website in a way that allows all of the parties involved to understand. The preceding chapter highlighted a number of benefits to grayscreen prototyping but it is important to remember that

@Alex, We build them using a spinoff of our CMS to make generating pages in a site structure simple. Then we use basic HTML and a bit of javascript to lay out the page and prototype more complex functionality. The fancy pop-up you're seeing is just something I did in Photoshop to magnify some detail

Nolan, this comment has me thinking . . . It would be interesting to approach an especially complex development project with the same tiered process you take with CMS development--build the simplest part first, then move slowly up the ladder in complexity. Since we do not typically build complex web

New England Gas Company
New England Gas Company approached Newfangled Web Factory to create a new website that would integrate four separate sites (ProvGas.com, FallRiverGas.com, nattlegas.com, ValleyResources.com) under one new company name. This presented a major information design challenge. The new website would need t

The web development process is the chief subject of this book. Its corollary subject is the nature and role of information design in web development. The two subjects are inseparable. The web development process is designed to facilitate the skill of information design. The relationship between the

Because grayscreen prototyping is the foundation of our development process, we have built many automated tools for creating and modifying prototypes efficiently. The principles of prototyping, however, are technology independent. Our first prototypes were built with straightforward HTML, some were
